     1.  Why public cord blood donation (versus keeping it in the private cord blood bank) ?

          為什麼是捐給公共臍血庫？

It is important that Canadians understand that with the introduction of a national pubic cord blood bank, they have a choice of either banking their baby’s cord blood through a private facility or donating it publically through the Canadian Blood Services’ Cord Blood Bank for any patient in need.

Canadian Blood Services’ Cord Blood Bank is a national program that recruits healthy, volunteer mothers delivering at a designated collection hospital across the country and collects cord blood donations at no charge.

At any given time, there are hundreds of Canadian patients, many who are representative of Canada’s varied ethnic communities, searching for an unrelated stem cell donor.  Approximately 50 per cent of patients who need an unrelated blood stem cell transplant are unable to find a suitable match.

The unique diversity composition of Canada has presented a large gap in our ability to find matches for patients, even with the ability to access over 26 million potential adult donors and –almost 683,000 publically banked cord blood units worldwide.

Patients from diverse populations, particularly Aboriginal, Black and mixed race patients, often have increased complexities in finding a matched donor, as a patient’s best chance of finding a match is with someone of similar ancestry.

Canadian Blood Services’ Cord Blood Bank is helping to close this gap by offering more matching possibilities.

  

     2. Can they still use public cord blood when they reach teenage?

         當患者到青春期時，可以使用當時存於公共臍帶血庫的臍血嗎?

      Cord blood stem cell donations are stored in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196 degrees Celsius (-320.8 degrees Fahrenheit)     and can be stored for a very long time before being used.  As for cell longevity, it is still unknown how long cord blood can be stored,   but there are examples of cord blood stem cells being transplanted after 13 years without any detected deterioration in quality and  other studies showing cord blood units remaining viable after over 20 years.  With this knowledge, and staying directly involved with  the medical community, Canadian Blood Services’ Cord Blood Bank is confident in providing the highest quality cord blood stem cells  for many year.

      

      3. If it’s matched to be used by someone, would the donor be required to donate more again?

          現時如果配型成功，將來會要讓當時捐出臍血的人捐出更多嗎?

     

      Cord blood is collected in advance, stored and ready for use immediately as needed, decreasing patient wait times for a stem cell donor search. Canadian Blood Services would not follow-up to collect additional stem cells from the donor.

4. If not a citizen of Canada and have gone back to China, would they be eligible to access the cord blood in China (say a relative requires cord blood to treat certain diseases in China and because it  has higher chance to be matched, are they allowed to have access to the cord blood from Canada)? 如果不是加拿大公民，並且已回去中國，他們可以有權利使用當時捐出的臍帶血嗎？（譬如說在中國的親人需要當時捐出的臍血，因為有可能比較能配型成功。他們可否由中國來使用存在於加拿大臍血庫的臍血？

To reserve donated cord blood for family use is the practice of private cord blood banking. To reserve donated cord blood for your family’s use only, please make those arrangements directly with a private cord blood bank. Canadian Blood Services’ Cord Blood Bank is for any patient in need of an unrelated stem cell transplant.

As part of Canadian Blood Services’ OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, the data from all banked cord blood donations will be listed within the network and available to all Canadians patients currently searching for an unrelated stem cell match.  This same data will then be uploaded into an international database of over 683,000 publically banked cord blood donations from 53 cord blood banks worldwide for all patients in need of an unrelated donor.
